Implants used to support fixed or removable dentures & bridges
When someone has been edentulous (without their own teeth) for a lengthy period of time... the part of the jaw bone that once held teeth, inevitably resorbs away.
Normal jaw bone seen surrounding natural teeth in a 36 year old male. Notice the full height of jaw bone which will become lost as teeth potentially also become lost.Notice the height of normal jaw bone, with the majority being alveolar bone that surrounds teeth roots.
Developing jaw bone (alveolar) resorption seen locally in areas of posterior (molar) tooth loss in a 55 year old male. Teeth had been removed 15 years previously. Notice the thinning of the posterior mandible, as alveolar bone continues to resorb away.
Severe alveolar bone resorption seen in both jaws in an 85 year old female. Complete lower loss of teeth occurred 40 years previously, & the lower full denture is non-functional; affecting the quality & range of nutritional intake.
This resorption compromises the retention of the full or partial denture. The effect is seen in both jaws, but is especially seen in the mandible.
The result is a person eventually being unable to wear their denture(s). An eventuality that effects eating & enjoyment of life, & often comes at an age when people are most vulnerable to the effects of poor nutrition... our elderly.
A selection of dentures is seen at right, including full acrylic & partial Co-Cr dentures.
Whilst dentures are an effective and convenient way of replacing the look and aesthetics of lost teeth, implants are a convenient & simple way to help in the retention & improved function of full or partial removable dentures or bridge work.
Modern implants use pure titanium supports which “fuse” to & maintain your natural living bone. Used with either zirconia or titanium "supra-structures" or special "clicking" locators, implants can be used to lock into the underside of your removable dentures, to dramatically improve retention and biting forces.
Implant secured dentures are a cheap, effective & simple way to support dentures, to improve chewing & to enhance the simple enjoyment of eating.

Strategically placed upper implants can assist in retaining partial or full dentures where there is excessive bone loss, or existing poor retention features in your existing denture. Two or three implants are a cost-effective alternative to full reconstruction alternatives, and can dramatically improve chewing function with your existing denture design... Read more
Implant retained maxillary bridge-work can be extended to reconstruction of an entire upper arch of teeth. The All-On-Four design framework (utilising internal cone AstraTech technology) allows for minimisation of implant numbers, and for construction of a substantial and stable zirconium or titanium supra-structure, which in turn provides solid foundation for a full arch reconstruction of your maxillary teeth... Implant retained maxillary bridges
Where back teeth are lost, the wearing of a partial upper denture to replace lost molar teeth can be uncomfortable, especially as palatal plate coverage is often required. Replacing posterior teeth through implant supported bridges, dramatically lengthens the occlusal table, replicates the shape and function of your missing teeth, and permanently does away with dentures... The lower full denture is a notoriously difficult appliance to use, especially as mandibular jaw bone can resorb away to a degree that can totally eliminate any potential for denture retention. With loss of retention, chewing ability decreases, until eventually the wearer is forced to sustain themselves on a puree diet. Strategically placed implants can dramatically improve full-denture retention and chewing function... Read more
The ultimate in full lower reconstruction, implants offer a real and long term solution to complete lower tooth loss. The prospect of losing teeth is daunting enough, but the prospect of a life time of full lower denture wear can be a formidable physical commitment. Strategically placed implants are long term solution to complete tooth loss, and can help retain full lower fixed prostheses, with dramatic improvements in chewing ability and oral comfort... Implant retained mandibular bridges
Where back teeth are lost, the wearing of a partial lower denture to replace lost molar teeth can be uncomfortable, with denture wear potentially accelerating remaining tooth loss. Replacing posterior teeth through implant supported bridges, dramatically lengthens the occlusal table, replicates the shape and function of your missing teeth, and permanently does away with dentures...
