TOOTH CYSTS AND ABSCESSES

DENTO-ALVEOLAR SURGERY involves operating directly to teeth and/or the immediately surrounding bony or soft tissues of the mouth (the so called dento-alveolus).

Dento-alveolar surgery is essentially "Oral Surgery", and is conducted by general dentists (to a minor degree), oral surgeons, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The aims are however the same... That it is quick, has minimal side effects, and the treatments are enhancing... Not destructive.

If you are unsure about the qualifications or experience of your practitioner, always seek a second opinion before you submit to an operation. The worse thing about oral surgery is that if you readily agree to what you think is a small operation (because you are in pain, you are looking for the quick-fix, or because it is seemingly cheap), then you may be left with problems far in excess of what you started out with.

Problems usually mean more money, more time, and also... more surgery.

Dento-alveolar surgery covers the treatment of a wide range of surgical oral problems. Take the time to read through some of the larger topics, and try to click on the links for further information. The more information at your finger tips, the better able you are to make an informed decision on your best treatment pathway... Good luck!

WISDOM TOOTH SURGERY

Almost everyone gets wisdom teeth (about 99% of us). Sometimes we may only develop one third molar, but the majority of us have all four. Most wisdom teeth will cause problems in a person's lifetime, and problems usually represent something serious. Prophylactic wisdom teeth removal is increasingly becoming more vogue as dentists & patients realise that sometimes prevention is better than cure... Read more

SURGICAL TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

Everyone eventually has to have a tooth removed. Most dentists do this quickly using extraction forceps, but an easier and less traumatic way is to remove teeth through surgery. Surgical tooth extractions preserve surrounding tissue, and lead to less tissue bruising, and importantly maximally preserve bone and gum tissue. If you are considering an implant replacement to your extracted tooth, we recommend that you acquire a specialist oral surgeon to remove the tooth in the first place... Read more

FULL DENTAL CLEARANCE (THE HOPELESS DENTITION)

There comes a point where a hopeless dentition needs removal, and planning for formal prosthodontic management can begin. Hopeless may mean extensive periodontal disease, multiple carious or abscessed teeth, or that the reminaing teeth that remain are just functionless. Removing hopeless teeth often means a dramatic improvement in one's oral and general health. Planning to coordinate what replaces your teeth is even more critically important... Read more

DENTAL EXTRACTIONS IN MEDICALLY COMPROMISED PATIENTS

When you are already unwell, having decayed or periodontally diseased teeth can often make you more unwell. Your general medical condition may also be affected by the dental treatment you receive. Read about some conditions that require formal combined medical-dental managment, and how the Medicare Enhanced Primary Care Programme can assist with the cost of private specialist care... IMPACTED CANINE MANAGEMENT

The canine is an important  corner stone of the dental arch. The canine tooth is often however impacted, and if it does not naturally come down into the arch, then associated bone and gum tissue also does not grow, giving a flattened appearance to the local alveolus (and to the overlying lip). Specialist orthodontists are important people in aligning teeth, and work with oral surgeons to help guarnatee that your impacted canine eventually, and naturally, comes into your dental arch... PRE-PROSTHETIC SURGERY

Wearing dentures is never pleasant, but techniques exist that can enhance and make more comfortable the process of fitting the ideal denture for you. Many pre-prosthetic surgical services are Medicare covered (when provided by accredited oral & maxillofacial surgeons), and surgeons work closely with your dentist or dental prosthetist to design something right for you... ALVEOLAR BONE GRAFTING

When you remove a tooth, it quite obviously leaves a hole in your jaw bone. With increasing age, less of this hole is likely to fill in with natural bone, and sometimes a large crater or dip is left in the jaw bone. Modern surgical techniques include reconstructive materials, and alveolar bone grafting has become almost routine surgery to repair surgical, anatomical or destructive defects of the jaw bones... GINGIVAL GRAFTING

Sometimes gums just dissapear. Heavy brushing, plaque traps, and just the peculiarities of your local anatomy predispose to gums dissolving over roots of teeth. This leaves your teeth vulnerable to more gum loss... And eventually... You lose the tooth. Gum grafting is a quick, succesful way of achieving your gum lines back... and all with very heavy specialist surgical Medicare subsidies... Read more

TRACTION SCREW MOVEMENT OF TEETH

Sometimes teeth are just in the wrong position, and no matter how much your orthodontist tries, the tooth just won't go to the right place. Traction screws are Medicare subsidised procedures, which are simple, cheap, and very quick... And importantly assist in providing just that right amount of traction pull on that stubborn tooth (or teeth)... Read more

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Lost that special tooth? Not sure if everyone notices when you smile? Not too happy with wearing a denture, or even the prospect of a bridge? Why not consider the permanent and natural alternative to dentures or bridges? Dental titanium implants are the most cost effective, lasting, and naturally effective replacement to your lost tooth... DENTO-ALVEOLAR INJURY MANAGEMENT

Fallen flat on your face? Been kicked in the mouth by a horse? Been punched in the lip by your friendly bikie? Knocking front teeth, and fracturing the brittle and fragile local bone and gums surrounding your teeth requires more than just shoving that displaced tooth back in. If you want lasting care, with your front teeth firmly in place, and without a lifetime of dental and medical bills, seek the care of an oral surgeon right from the start. Most trauma surgery is treated with considerable Medicare subsidies when provided by oral & maxillofacial surgeons... Read more

TOOTH ABSCESSES & TREATMENT OF TOOTH BASED INFECTION

Odontogenic cysts and abscesses are common in the alveolar part of your jaw bone. Root canal therapy may assist, but treatment often requires multiple practitioners for care. Sometimes it is better to go tail first and seek the specialist first... This way, you have him refer you back to your dentist for root canal work... If you need it (rather than the other way round). Abscesses and cysts are Medicare subsidised conditions when treated by oral & maxillofacial surgeons... Read more
