At Ocean Surgical we aim to provide you with as much information as possible about the procedure for which you have been referred or recommended. Your first appointment with us is substantially to discuss your proposed procedure, and to obtain a legal consent for treatment from you.
Most patients have the legal right to provide their own consent for treatment.
However, children under 16yrs of age require formal consent by their legal guardian or by a court-appointed legal guardian. Some adults may also have a court-appointed legal guardian.
People who are legal guardians need to attend with the client at the initial consultation in order to provide a legal consent for their wards.
Without a legal informed-consent the practice is unable to offer you estimates of surgical costs, or offer you a surgical appointment.
If you book your surgery more than 3 months after your consultation date, we normally require a consent update, which may also require repeat x-ray and clinical examination. This is to ensure that any changes to your circumstances are noted (and therefore any changes required to the proposed surgery), and are recorded in a fashion which is timely and relevant to your treatment date.
In most circumstances, you will be offered a free review appointment to update your consent. New estimates of surgical costs may also be provided if old estimates have expired.
Please feel free to browse through the following practice policies concerning consent for appointments, consultation, treatment & discharge...
1. Agreement to conditions of obtaining a consultation appointment
2. Initial consultation consent upon arrival
3. Treatment consent
4. Discharge consent
5. Medico-Legal reporting consent
