Bone Grafting and Wisdom Teeth Surgery

BONEGRAFTING AND WISDOM TEETH SURGERY

Impacted wisdom teeth often result in the jaw bone behind the second molar to resorb therefore exposing the root surface of the second molar.  Removal of a wisdom tooth can cause the back surface of the 2nd molar to become sensitive to cold, hot and sugary foods and liquids.  It can also result in loss of this tooth due to ongoing periodontal (gum) disease in the area as a result of the periodontal pocket which forms as a consequence of the bone loss after the 3rd molar removal.  The bone lost will not regenerate itself after extraction of the wisdom tooth.

Recent advances in bioengineering techniques make it possible for alveolar bone grafts to lead to regeneration of the bone distal to (behind) the lower second molar tooth at the time of removal of the wisdom teeth.  These treatments have proved effective in controlling potential short term and long term symptoms in the lower second molar tooth.

We use bovine bone and porcine collagen for biotissue reengineering of the distal alveolus of the lower second molar following (partially erupted and horizontally impacted) third molar removal in those aged greater than 25yrs.

When carried out under general anaesthetic in a private hospital environment we no gap the bonegrafting procedure through your private medical health insurer.  If carried out in our room under IV sedation or LA bonegrafting with wisdom teeth, bonegrafting attracts a Medicare rebate.
