Salivary Gland Biopsy for Sjogren's Syndrome

Biopsy of salivary gland tissue is taken from the midline of the inside of the lower lip.

Minor salivary glands are taken and are used to detect inflammatory cell infiltrates. A positive test is seen where salivary gland globules have cellular clusters of usually lymphocytes.

Salivary gland biopsies are quick 5 minute procedures and are heavily Medicare subsidised.
