INTRAVENOUS SEDATION
Use of intravenous (IV) sedation to complement local anaesthesia and minor oral surgery

Intravenous sedation is a specialist only technique, that allows operators to provide anxiety control at the same time as performing in-house local anaesthetic based operations (particularly in oral & maxillofacial surgery).

The use of intravenous medications facilitates oral surgical procedures in the surgeons office, and is a rational and cost effective alternative for full private-hospital based general anaesthesia.

Ocean Surgical uses approved IV sedation staff and monitoring facilities at the rooms at Honeysuckle.  Our monitoring equipment and recovery facilities are state-of-the-art, and our staff are fully licenced and trained in the administration and monitoring of IV sedation procedures.

IV sedation is a cheap, effective and safe alternative to general anaesthesia conducted in a private hospital. We use midazolam and fentanyl, with oxygen administration provided throughout the oral surgical procedure.

IV sedation is not suitable for everyone, and will depend on a medical assessment and the complexity and duration of the procedure. Normally all patients are ASA category P1, over the age of 16 years, above 50kg in weight, and less than 110kg, and are undergoing only quick and simple oral surgical procedures.

You will be asked to not eat or drink for 6 hours prior to your IV sedation procedure, and importantly you are required to bring a person who will take you home and who will care for you over the next 24 hours.
